Abstract

Introduction: To map and synthesize evidence from health education programs (HEPs) aimed at improving men’s engagement with health services, including original studies, community programs, and clinical guidelines.

Methods: Following PRISMA-ScR, we conducted a comprehensive search of databases and guideline repositories to identify (1) health education programs, (2) original studies evaluating HEPs, and (3) clinical guidelines related to men’s health. Data were synthesized thematically across these evidence streams.

Results: Ninety-two sources were included (30 programs, 39 primary studies, 23 guidelines). Effective HEPs commonly used gender-sensitive messaging, decision aids, peer- or community-based delivery, and digital platforms. Programs situated in male-centric environments (sports clubs, barbershops, workplaces) demonstrated high acceptability and engagement. Guidelines consistently emphasized routine screening, particularly for prostate cancer, and lifestyle interventions such as physical activity and smoking cessation.

Conclusion: Across diverse evidence types, HEPs that are culturally tailored, gender-sensitive, and delivered in male-friendly settings are most effective in increasing men’s engagement with health services. Strong emphasis on prostate cancer screening in existing evidence highlights the need for broader attention to other prevalent male health issues.
